Dit is veel meer dan een traditionele tweede wijn van Carmes Haut Brion, maar een op zichzelf staande wijn met een andere herkomst, andere blend en een ander gezicht.
Hierin zit géén Cabernet Franc (het DNA van de Grand Vin), maar voornamelijk Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) met Merlot (38%) en Petit Verdot (2%). Het aandeel hele trossen in de vergistkuipen (25%) is daarnaast wat lichter dan bij de Grand Vin en dat draagt bij aan de verfijnde structuur. De druiven komen bovendien uit Martillac, zuidelijker dus, en dat proef je: de wijn is energieker, puurder, speelser - maar met dezelfde finesse en precisie die de wijnen van Carmes Haut Brion zo herkenbaar maken.
Wine Advocate (92-94 punten) legt in hun recensie van de 2023 ook uit hoe dat kan. Guillaume Pouthier (technisch directeur van dienst) "steers clear of excessive extraction, unlike some of his peers, and focuses instead on preserving the vibrant flavors and aromas with the purity and precision of the mouthfeel". Het resultaat is, kort gezegd, een naadloze wijn. Puur, elegant en direct expressief in het glas.
Bourgondische aroma's en Bordelaise structuur
Dat is ook exact wat de critici oppikken. Diezelfde Wine Advocate noemt het: "a terrific vintage wine bursting in the glass with pure, fresh and complex aromas of mulberries, cassis, violet and dark wild berries." Falstaff (94 punten) noemt het een wijn met Bourgondische aroma's en de structuur van een Bordeaux. Als je het ons vraagt, zijn dat de kenmerken van een droomwijn.
De 2023 in het glas

In het glas toont de 2023 een diepe, intens gekleurde robe. De neus opent met donkere kersen, melkchocolade en ceder (hierin komen het rijpe fruit en de houtopvoeding terug), gevolgd door een ziltige mineraliteit, viooltjes en een subtiele kruidigheid van maggi en aarde. In de mond is hij zacht en rond van structuur, prachtig gedragen door fijne zuren. Puur, direct en vol plezier. Voor deze prijs simpelweg niet te missen.

The 2023 C Des Carmes Haut-Brion is based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, 25% stems, with a portion raised in foudre. Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, it has a gorgeous nose of cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and underbrush. With medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and beautiful tannins, this is one to seek out.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening at the rim. Ripe plums, cassis and black cherries, nuances of fine nougat, orange zest. Complex, juicy, round and ripe, silky tannins, good freshness, pronounced fruit in the finish, ripe cherries in the aftertaste, a delicate food wine with good length. Burgundian aromas with Bordeaux structure.

The 2023 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion is a terrific vintage wine bursting in the glass with pure, fresh and complex aromas of mulberries, cassis, violet and dark wild berries. Medium to full-bodied, creamy and seamless, it’s fleshy core of fruit is framed by bright acids a d supple tannins. This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot is the most accomplished C de Carmes to date. It's maturing 10% in amphorae and the rest in foudres of 50 hectoliters.

Gorgeous floral aromatics on this wine, fine tannins, delivering lift and energy with a precise and vibrant focus on peony and violet flowers. Things get pretty serious on the palate with concentrated aniseed and fennel, and some austerity. 25% whole cluster, 20% new barrels, 70% vats of 30hl, 10% amphoras. 50hl/h yield. Two years in barrel and then one year in bottle before release. Harvest September 20 to October 5.

Crunchy and bright on the nose, some herbal and crisp fresh fruits, cranberry, red cherry and strawberry. Herbal Cabernet elements too. Super bright and fresh, clean, so crystalline and pure. Nice drinkability on offer, really lovely styling, has salinity and lots of minerality with a direct frame. Not as plush or weighty as some, but there are gorgeous aromatics, juiciness and a clean definition to the tannins. Very finessed and balanced. A stunning second wine. 3.60pH. 25% whole bunch fermentation. Harvest September 20 to October 5. Ageing 20% new oak, 70% vats of 30hl and 10% amphoras.
