Deze appellations zijn wat meer landinwaarts vanaf de Gironde gesitueerd, maar gezegend met geheel eigen unieke terroirs, waarvan de beste in staat zijn om wijnen te produceren die gelijk zijn aan Grand Cru Classés. Een van de meest indrukwekkende châteaus is Branas Grand Poujeaux in Moulis.
Op een paar kilometer ten noorden van Margaux ligt een plateau genaamd Grand Poujeaux dat bestaat uit Günzian grind vermengd met klei-, kalksteen- en zandlagen; een terroir dat identiek aan dat van de Grand Cru Classés die hun wijngaarden op hetzelfde plateau hebben. Hier vinden we ook Château Chasse Spleen en Château Poujeaux. Een goede vriend van mij en oprichter van négociant Sovex, de Belg Justin Onclin, was perfect op de hoogte van deze bijzondere ligging en aarzelde dan ook geen moment toen hij in 2002 de kans kreeg Branas Grand Poujeaux te kopen.
De familie Onclin investeerde flink in de technische uitrusting van de kelders en breidde het wijngaardareaal in de loop der jaren verder uit met de mooiste percelen op het Grand Poujeaux plateau: de kwaliteit steeg in de loop der jaren aanzienlijk! Consultancy door Hubert de Boüard.

De Primus Inter Pares van de appellation Moulis, mede dankzij de gunstige ligging en het vakmanschap in de kelder. Met veel typiciteit, rijpheid en concentratie, en een verleidelijk parfum van cassis, ceder, tabak en specerijen. Sappig en met veel fruitrijkdom en volle body. Consistent hoog niveau!

Gorgeous aromatic expression on the nose, full of cherries and red summer fruit, cinnamon, clove and vanilla with floral edges. Smooth and supple, round and generous on the palate. SIlky, but softly chalky too - the fruit is pristine, clear and pure with balanced acidity that is wide and long in the mouth. Tannins are sleek and so well integrated, just giving some touches of bitterness - chocolate, coffee and cedar - while the mineral flint and wet stone come in towards the finish. Feels confident and well sculpted. Power is there but this is presented so charmingly. A gorgeous wine, filling, bright, finessed but still really concentrated and with a long life ahead. Not plush, more sleek and streamlined, direct and focussed - but it's the purity of this that captures and the nuance of herbs, spices, fruit, acidity and salinity. Easily to mistake this for a Grand Cru Classé.

Lusciously textured fruits come through with ease on the palate, along with its layers of savory blackberries, touch of dark cocoa, smoke, thyme and black cherries. The finish is even better due to its layers of soft, polished, ripe dark fruits. Give this a few years of age and its going to be great for almost 2 decades

The 2019 Branas Grand Poujeaux is a charming, expressive wine, exhibiting aromas of rich berry fruit, spices, dark chocolate and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and sensual palate. Layered and seamless, it's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids. This is one of the flashier, more concentrated wines produced in Moulis, but it carries its ambitious vinification well.
Today Branas Grand Poujeaux amounts to some 23 hectares, having doubled in size by the incorporation of a contiguous neighbor. The estate's highly morcellated holdings are dotted around the plateau of Grand Poujeaux on deep gravel soils and are planted with some 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Directed by Arjen Pen, with veteran Right Bank winemaker Hubert de Boüard as consultant, the estate's style is rich and dramatic, framed by a generous but nicely integrated patina of new oak that mark these out as among the more impactful wines in Moulis. In the vineyards, new plantings are at high density and soils are mechanically cultivated, without pesticides since 2002. Malolactic occurs in barrel, some 50% of which are new.

The 2019 Branas Grand Poujeaux, cropped at 39hL/ha, has a delightful bouquet of beautifully defined black cherry, raspberry and light cedar aromas that gently unfurl in the glass. The saline palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and lightly spiced. The harmonious, silky-smooth finish is irresistible. Go buy.
