Directeur Arjen Pen: 'The choice of words by many of the world’s wine journalists for Branas Grand Poujeaux 2020 define well the character of the wine that we are able to make on the plateau of the Grand Poujeaux, a terroir of Günz gravel with deep layers of blue clay and limestone, a first growth terroir = one of Bordeaux’s best kept secrets ...'

The 2020 Branas Grand Poujeaux has a fresh and focused bouquet with blackberry, briary, bay leaf and hints of pressed iris flower. The oak is very nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-delineated tannins, lightly spiced with ample depth and grip. Lovely black fruit here and impressive tension on the finish. Bon vin.

This is attractive with a medium to full body, polished and sleek texture, and an array of ripe blackberries, plums, sweet spices and cedar undertones. Some walnut, too. Lingering and flavorful. 60% merlot, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

Firm but vibrant tannins, this has the softest smokey oak notes that really line the palate and give the plump black fruits a cushion as they travel through to the finish. Well judged and carefully extracted. 60% new oak. New owners (or rather two new investors, Hindrik Gommer and Arjen Pen, alongside original owner Justin Onclin) as of 2019, and extra vineyards with the addition of part of the excellent Granins Grand Poujeaux. Hubert de Boüard consultant. A value pick.

A strong effort, the 2020 Branas Grand Poujeaux exhibits aromas of sweet spices, cherries, berries, licorice, loamy soil and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and lively, in a bold and dramatic but nicely balanced style, it will offer a broad drinking window.

Scoring at the top of the range, due to all of the freshness and vibrance in the sweet, plums and cherries, the tannins are soft, polished and elegant, giving you the opportunity to enjoy all the chocolate, plums and sweet, spicy, earthy, ripe fruits in the finish.
