Gemêleerd terroir, veelzijdige Pauillac
De (biologisch onderhouden) wijngaarden liggen, in tegenstelling tot die van GPL, verspreid over een groot deel van de appellatie. Ze liggen deels op hetzelfde Grand-Puy-plateau en grenzen op verschillende plaatsen aan onder meer Mouton Rothschild en Lafite Rothschild. Andere wijngaarden liggen op rivierterrassen aanzienlijk dichter bij de Gironde, wat het terroir iets verandert (meer klei) en ook de temperatuur tempert. Die combinatie maakt Grand-Puy Ducasse een veelzijdigere weerspiegeling van Pauillac.
Ook een nieuwe kelder, meer precisie
Grand-Puy Ducasse is recentelijk een nieuwe wijnkelder betrokken. Die geografische versnippering wordt dankzij moderne microvinificatie steeds meer een voordeel, omdat elk perceel afzonderlijk kan worden gevinifieerd en beoordeeld. De uiteindelijke assemblage krijgt daardoor veel meer complexiteit en nuance. Zoals Jancis Robinson opmerkt, heeft de wijn "more precision than in the past". Ook Neal Martin noemt de wijn "vastly improved" en prijst vooral de souplesse en toegankelijkheid. Antonio Galloni legt de nadruk op de balans: "All the elements are so well proportioned."
Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is duidelijk een château in de lift. Jancis Robinson schrijft: "Pauillac was perhaps the most impressive, the top estates striking, others like Grand-Puy Ducasse, Haut-Bages Libéral and Pédesclaux upping their game."

Logischerwijs betekent die veelzijdigheid in terroir óók dat er verschillende druivenrassen, zoals Merlot en Petit Verdot, staan aangeplant. De blend van 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot en 3% Petit Verdot levert een wijn op die opvallend evenwichtig is. Cassis, viooltjes, ceder, sigarenkistje en grafiet vormen de klassieke Pauillac-basis, maar daarboven zweeft een opvallend florale finesse. Dit heeft concentratie en frisheid, met rood en zwart fruit op het palet en een fijne ziltige afdronk, die lang blijft nazingen.
Grand-Puy Ducasse behoort inmiddels tot de interessantste Pauillacs in zijn prijsklasse. Voor liefhebbers van klassieke Pauillac met moderne precisie is dit een van de aantrekkelijkste aankopen van deze campagne.

Lovely fragrance and intensity of aromatics, blackcurrants and cherries with some dried herbal notes. Supple and grippy, chalky and filling but with such delicacy that it’s not at all overwhelming. Young but not really tight or too focused, it settles after a few minutes opening up the ripe black fruit. Mouthwatering acidity perfectly balances the tannins and structure without one part being over the top. I like the restrained style but there’s still an undercurrent of blueberries, cola, mint, liquorice and graphite. Assured and confident. Spiced.

The 2025 Grand Puy Ducasse has a very succinct nose. At first, it feels maybe a bit underpowered, yet with a few swirls it reveals gorgeous blackberry, cedar and violet scents that blossom over time. The palate is medium-bodied with very lithe and supple tannins, well-judged acidity and commendable cohesion on the finish. This vastly improved Pauillac should be more approachable than some of its peers, yet it has the substance to age in bottle.

The 2025 Grand Puy Ducasse is a gorgeous, racy wine. Silky red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal build in the glass. More than anything else, the wine's balance is terrific. Grand Puy Ducasse remains a bold, fruity Pauillac, but its balance is commendable. All the elements are so well proportioned.
