The 2021 Heldervallei is pure Cinsault that lies adjacent to the parcel of Chenin Blanc on Sinai Hill from vines planted in 1988, although the original vineyard is 20 years older and some of those vines are extant. Blended with 30% whole clusters with 10 months on the lees, it has a powerful, delineated bouquet with red berry fruit, wild mint and fennel, a slight tang of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannines, very smooth and pliant, perfect balance and purity, gentle grip with mineral-rich red red berry fruit. From Stellenbosch grapes. 30% whole-bunch fermentation. Enticing aromatics of rosemary, blueberry and black cherry while the palate is medium bodied with good fruit definition, fresh acidity and tannins that are firm but fine. Nicely structured – tightly wound and not at all frivolous.
