Lions de Batailley is de tweede wijn van het Château. De wijn is vernoemd naar de stenen leeuwen die trots op de poortposten van het château staan.
Cassis, dille en potloodslijpsel bepalen het klassieke bouquet van deze Pauillac. Ook klassiek qua smaak-architectuur; rijp en vol van body zoals we Pauillac kennen. Met rijpe, zwoele maar aanwezige tannine die nog een goed bewaarpotentieel beloven. Toch is deze tweede wijn nu ook al heel lekker (en is dat niet juist ook de charme van tweede wijnen?).

The 2018 Lions de Batailley is finely tuned on the nose, even though it does demand coaxing from the glass. Pure blackberry and dark cherry fruit vie for attention, hints of pencil lead and wild mint percolating through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the tightly wound, quite strict black fruit laced with graphite that pinpoints it as a Pauillac. This is quite serious for a second label, principally because, as I advised from barrel, it will demand two or three years in bottle to loosen its tie. But I like the salinity that lingers on the aftertaste.

An excellent-quality Lions de Batailley, with pencil lead and cassis that very much puts it in the Batailley family and ensures it is a classic Pauillac. This is really worth looking out for.
