De Spätburguner ‘S’ is een blend van de verschillende Grosse Lage wijngaarden van Meyer-Näkel, de ‘S’ staat namelijk voor ‘Selektion’. Het betreft een heel fraaie wijn met veel aroma’s van rode en zwarte kersen, peper en zoethout. Een beetje rokerig in de neus. Op het palet zeer krachtig, maar toch ook ingetogen, met verfijnde tannines en mooi geïntegreerde zuren.

Quite some smoky oak here, plus a hint of funk (reduction) that blows off quickly as it aerates. Then the full black-cherry and forest-berry aromas wrap nicely around the generous, fine tannins. Good concentration and length, quite oaky, but the long finish is dominated by the bright minerality. Mostly from steep sites belonging to the communes of Dernau and Marienthal. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Spätburgunder S opens with a deep, pure, intense and elegant but pretty toasty nose of dark berries, crushed coffee beans, dark chocolate and crushed herbs and stones. On the palate, this is a rich and sweet but pure, refined and elegant Pinot with fine, mealy tannins and generous fruit of black berries and cherries. The 2019 is voluptuous but fine, fresh and vital, yet it needs a year or three to fully integrate the oaky notes that will need the right meat and sauce to become better integrated. 13.5% alcohol. Natural cork.
