The 2022 Swanesang is pure Syrah grown on granite soils, matured in concrete eggs, and 20% in 400-liter barrels. The potent bouquet is quite arresting, with dark berry fruit, Lapsang Souchang, crushed iris flower and lavender scents. You won't forget these aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins. Very mineral-driven, taut and focused, very elegant yet persistent on the classically styled finish. I cannot wait to see how this will age in bottle, though it will be difficult to resist.

There’s a meaty quality to this syrah, almost feral, with iron and charcuterie aromas mingling with olive and black berry fruits. Layered, with very fine tannins and a medium body. Lovely combination of silky texture and more rustic aromatics. From one of the last bush vine syrah vineyards in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch. 80% vinified in concrete. 2666 bottles produced. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Swanesang Syrah, at 12.40% alcohol, stands out as the most serious of the range. This wine is focused, fresh and mineral-driven, with aromas of dusty plum skin, spiced cherry and subtle hints of peppercorns, enhanced by a delightful spicy dusty floral note. Although light-bodied, the wine is full of character. The palate is fresh, balanced and complex, offering delightful mineral tension that glides effortlessly with succulent acidity. It showcases refinement and finesse, culminating in a food-friendly finish. The wine aged in neutral Burgundian oak for 11 months. This is a production of 2,670 bottles. Bravo. I'm going back for more.
